Turkish Engine Center established in Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport with the partnership of Turkish Airlines Technic Inc. and American engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney, was awarded with LEED “Gold” certificate for environmentally sensitive applications. The Turkish Engine Center, which was operating in January of January 2010, was designed and constructed in an environmentally sensitive concept according to the US Green Building Council’s  Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design standards. As a result of the evaluations conducted for the project the Turkish Engine Center was the second company in Turkey to be awarded the gold eco-friendly building certificate in Turkey on 29 July 2010.

The Turkish Engine Center facility  which will provide a healthy environment for its employees, will save a considerable amount of energy costs as a result of the efficient use of natural resources. The environmentally friendly design features of the plant can be listed as follows:

  • The facility is designed to save 25% of energy consumption compared to similar buildings.
  • The use of daylight in office areas has been enhanced thanks to its wide facade windows. This reduces the need for electricity and the need for additional ventilation.
  • In addition to its wide facade windows, a special daylight lighting system installed on the roof provides daylight to the places where work is done in buildings and workshops.
  • Advanced ventilation systems provide 30% more fresh air. In addition, since the system is controlled by carbon dioxide (CO2) sensors, energy consumption is reduced and a more comfortable work environment for the personnel is created.
  • The lighting system is controlled by daylight sensors.
  • Cooling systems have been chosen so as not to damage the ozone layer.
  • Thanks to the Advanced Building Automation System, the energy consumption due to the human factor is prevented. The system immediately reports errors that may occur at the same time to the maintenance team.
  • The roof of the building is covered with reflective material for cooling purposes.
  • 10% of the materials used during construction were obtained from recycled sources. In this regard, provision of additional raw materials has been prevented.
  • 40% of the materials used during construction were provided from domestic sources. Transportation and carbon emissions are reduced to a minimum level.
78% of the excavated soil removed used as filling material as a waste management policy
  • Rain water is collected from the roof and stored in tanks of 500 m3. The stored water is filtered according to the city water level and is used throughout the plant, including irrigation. Total water saving exceeds 60%.
  • The landscape is specially designed with plant species that require very little irrigation.
  • Light colored concrete is used instead of black asphalt against the effect of heat island in the roads and park areas of the facility.
