BREEAM IN USE

The methodology within the current BREEAM In-Use version was originally developed for use in the UK. Current assessments against BREEAM In-Use outside of the UK are awarded a BREEAM In-Use Baseline report (i.e. an indicative report). There has been increasing demand to develop an international version of BREEAM In-Use. Two thirds of certificated assessments are awarded baseline reports.

There are a number of tasks involved in the internationalisation of BREEAM in-Use.  The primary one is the updating of the core BREEAM In-Use question set. To initiate this process the BREEAM In-Use team has held a number of international and an energy workshops with international partners to outline BREEAM In-Use’s international visions and how they propose to do this.

Following feedback from the partners the questions have been revised to ensure applicability, comparability, sound logic and language of questions, modernisation of questions to include current technologies, and energy question adaptations to allow for a comparable international approach to energy. The energy modulator is based on Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) requirements and will be incorporated into the methodology so that comparisons can be made on assets internationally. This will lead to increased comparability of energy outputs across national schemes different countries.

It is expected that the updated question set and international manual tool will be ready by April 2012, and this will then proceed to be implemented into the BREEAM In-Use online system.

In addition to this, there is continued development of the National Scheme Operators and Scheme Agent versions using the country equivalent information that has been provided.
